All students in my studio are required to have the following gear ready prior to our first lesson. I teach lessons in person and online. All materials specific to online students only are marked (*). I do recommend having these set-ups regardless, as even an in-person student benefits from the ability to take online lessons in special cases.

1. The Virtual Connection (Tech)

Because we may meet via a high-definition virtual platform, your tech setup is our "classroom."

• A Dedicated Tablet or Computer *

Lessons must be taken on a device with a large enough screen for the student to see my technical demonstrations clearly. Smartphones are not permitted as primary lesson devices.

• High-Speed Internet *

A stable connection is required to prevent lag or audio distortion.

• Designated Power Supply *

Your device must be plugged into a charger during the lesson. A dead battery mid-lesson disrupts the flow of learning and cannot be rescheduled.

• Proper Lighting

Ensure there is a lamp or window in front of the student. Avoid sitting with a bright window behind the student (backlighting), as this makes it impossible for me to see technical details.

2. Instrument & Audio

• Guitar

6 string acoustic guitar. A steel string guitar has a louder and more dominating sound. You can expect steeper learning curve for pressing the strings. A nylon string guitar does not project as much and it is softer to press. I recommend going to your local music store and asking the clerk to allow you to try both before making a decision. Some brand recommendations are Yamaha, Fender, Taylor, Epiphone, or Ibanez. Many professionals play on Taylors, Martins, and Gibsons. 

• Guitar pick

Eventually, each student will discover their preference for pick style and width. A great place to start is with the medium (.60-.88mm) and adjust from there. 

• Tuner 

I've attached my recommendation here.

​• Proper Device Placement/Camera Angle*

You will need a stand or a stable surface to position your device's camera so I can see your hands, arms, and posture.

​3. The "Success Binder" & Supplies

Organization is a key pillar of my teaching model. Every student must have:

• 3-Ring Binder (1 or 1.5 inch)

This will house all the curated sheet music, technique exercises, and practice logs I email to you.

• Working Printer

You are responsible for printing the weekly materials sent to your communication channel prior to our lesson time.

• Pencil & Notebook

For taking notes and marking your music during our session.

• Metronome

• A chair

You want a chair that has no arms. A stool or a bench would be best.
