I need my students to be fully focused on the session. These tips for getting started ensure all of your technology, gear and personal needs are met to be able to fully show up. All materials specific to online students are marked (*). I encourage all students to acquire materials for online lessons, as you never know when you may need it.

1. The Virtual Connection (Tech)

Because we may meet via a high-definition virtual platform, your tech setup is our "classroom."

• A Dedicated Tablet or Computer *

Lessons must be taken on a device with a large enough screen for you to see me. Smartphones are not permitted as primary lesson devices.

• High-Speed Internet *

A stable connection is required to prevent lag or audio distortion.

• Designated Power Supply *

Your device must be plugged into a charger during the lesson. A dead battery mid-lesson disrupts the flow of learning and cannot be rescheduled.

• Proper Lighting

Ensure there is a lamp or window in front of the student. Avoid sitting with a bright window behind the student (backlighting), as this makes it impossible for me to see the student. Equally, for an in-person student, ensure you are in a well lit room to avoid straining the eyes in reading your music and materials.​

2. Instrument & Audio

• Bluetooth Speaker

I will send materials for you to sing along with during the session and in practice. This is important to keep charged and available in your designated practice zone.

• A video recording device

A cell phone is fine.

• Music stand

It is important to be able to look at your music without sacrificing your posture.

​• Proper Device Placement/Camera Angle*

You will need a stand or a stable surface to position your device's camera so I can see your hands, arms, and posture.

​3. The "Success Binder" & Supplies

Organization is a key pillar of my teaching model. Every student must have:

• 3-Ring Binder (1 or 1.5 inch)

This will house all the curated sheet music, technique exercises, and practice logs I email to you.

• Working Printer

You are responsible for printing the weekly materials sent to your communication channel prior to our lesson time.

• Pencil & Notebook

For taking notes and marking your music during our session.

• Metronome

• Water bottle

Always bring a full bottle of water to your lesson!
